Breakout Cables for Nuclear Power Plants

For easy installation indoor use where maximum fiber protection is needed, breakout style fiber optic cables are an excellent choice. Breakout cables are strong, rugged designs, but are larger and more expensive than distribution style cables. They are suitable for conduit runs, in cable trays and plenum applications.

Because each fiber is individually reinforced and protected, breakout designs allow for quick termination to any standard fiber optic connectors, including ST and SC types. Despite its higher cost, breakout cable can be more economic where fiber count isn't too large and distances too long, because it requires so much less labor to terminate.

Construction Each optical fiber is coated with a thermoplastic tight buffer, with the material dependent upon the required flame rating. Each buffered fiber is then surrounded with a polyaramid yarn for tensile strength, and covered with a sub-unit jacket. Like the buffer material, the sub-unit jacket material depends upon the flame rating.

Up to 60 sub-units are then combined under a outer jacket. Two versions of breakout cables are manufactured specifically for nuclear power plants, using any fiber type - 62.5/125, 50/125 (standard performance), 50/125 (10 Gigabit Ethernet performance) and single mode. These fibers are specially made for enhanced radiation resistance. Neither cable type uses PVC materials.
